• In connexion with the election of the Speaker of the Senate to replace Mr. Chang Chi, a most commendable action has been taken by Mr. Wang Chong-ting, who was nominated as candidate of tho Kuomintang. Mr. Wang has withdrawn "from the contest, this action being "dic- tated by a desire to prevent à repetition of scenon which wens enacted during the Brst attempt as the election of the Speaker. On August 25, the election was athrapted, but no result came out of it. Seoing that such a result is likely to como again, Mr. Wang has, for the sake of progress, insisted upon retiring. Mis isturally against the wishes of the mambers of his Party, bus he is deter mined to provent as much as possible the
