The one thing locking the Stamp Exhibition in Paris recently far oxhibit from the world's greatest stamp collector. Every philateliat knows-he loan it with his philatelia A B C-that there is a grutleman in Paris whollows the largest collection of stampa in existence. Philip Is Konotipto vo Ferrary is his name, und ho is the son of a lady formerly well known in London to the Duchess du Galliers. His adoptive father was a gul. lant officer of the Austrian army, Bitter Emmanuel is Ranotieru tur. Kriegsfeld.
M. Philip La Benoticry is one of the oldest at stamp-collectors, having started in the middle or early sixties. Posscend of great wealth, and with the still grunter advantage of starting when philately was young, he has amassed a collection as near the collector's ideal of completeness as it is possible for any individual to form. The number of stamps it contains is overi 10,000, kad its valuo has been varicusly astimated as enormous Sgures. Up to the present time he has probably spent nearly Having 4000,000 upon its formation. spent a fortune and half a century of time upon tho accumulation, it is not sur prising that he takes no risks with it, and uevor sends any portion of it to the public exhibitions. Indeed, thorsaro few phi- latolians who bave been privileged to see it, so a few particulars of its wealth of rarities may be acceptable.
This insatiable collector has purchased outright the sclleations of two presidenta the Royal Philatelic Society. The first of these, formed by the lato Sir Daniel Cooper, Bt., was sold to is Berotiere in 1678 for £3,000, then a record pries for stamp collection, but one which at the present day would bo. raro bargain. probably £20,000 would not buy such a collection to-day. Sir Daniel was the first president of the London society and his Mccessor was the lato Judge Philbrick. The latter sold his collection (excepting his English, stampe) to là Bonotiera. in 1882, establishing another record price it, 8,000. The Philbricks collection to-day would be worth nearer £30,000.
Each of these collections and many flosser ones have been incorporated in the Ferrary collection, which it is said may ultimately go to the Calliera Museum. in addition, this oranivoresis collector has FORTH BRITISH & MERCANTILE had the first pick of the stamp markets of the world for over forty years. was sold, for 'comparatively small figure In the 'seventies, ibo rarest stamp in the world. No other example, of this stamp has been found, although dealers and col lectors have searched Europe and Americs: for another specimen. This is the cent starp of British Gulaza, sued in 1860.
