AUCTIONEER.
The outstanding event was the dual reconi SHARE & GENERAL BROKER.
of H. S. Q. Anbington, Cambridge, who nat only parlorined the unprecedented feat of winning thres evonts-the hurdles, half- mite, and long jump - but in the last one created a new inter Varsity record. His 23, 5țins, displaces the 230b, Bins, accom plished by C. B. Fry in 1892.
The jubileo will long be known ar Ashington's year." Ashington has har a somewhat curious career. He won a xe. markable school mile for Harrow, and on griay up to Cambridge mau as third string in the three miles. He was ordered to give up running, and took to hurdling and jumping. Within ten days of starting serioas practice to won the long jump for Cambridge last year.
The bigh jumpers were below average, but elsewhere the form of the competitors way of a high standard. The sprint was cleverly won by W. II. Macintosh, whose
effort was beautifully timed, while in the 105 mile A. N. S. Jackson could findì nobedy fast enough to pace him, else he would have done something remarkable.

RESTAURANT STRIKE.
Klicken Stall Hold Up" the Criterion.
A situation not without humour, say the London Daily Chroniets of March 37, are at the Centerion Restaurant in Phealbiy-riren yesterday, when a strik- cerred amongst the workers in the kit. yhen. The were inuenerable persons wading imber; there was a battalion of waiters prepare to attend to their mants: but, ifortunately, there was n imr to be serval.

the waiters were detached frun the main bely in imad the few dishes which in couple of individuals required. The thee 48 waitors, in starched shirt-fronts. asping their intoaculate napkins with setsething of despair, were sentrered about
in gros staring grimly at the long lin of tenantless tables.
Some 70 man employed in the Criterion: kitchen were responsible for the Gilber tan position, and they struck work at e Critical perivi—when the ruler of th hed and restaurans world were alouf t
it down to lunch at midday in the Cri- borion scif. Nothing more tragic can l imagined than that the men who entenlate and scheme for the gastronomic comfort af London should be suddenly deprived
A their lunch.
Yet that is what occurred. The pro arters of London's hotels and restaur its had met to cotsider, amongst other matters, demands recently issued by a
tion of their workers for the adaptiran
of the Shop Hours Amendment Act of 1913, which is not an obligatory measure, and they intended varying their labour by lunch. But tho Criterion's kitchen workers asked for an immediats decision, and as the proprietors were not inclined to decide promptly, most of the workers 190truck, and brought the business of the restaurant to a cessation. They refusel to leave the premises, and were ultimat 'y turned out. Provision is mada by the Act for a 65-hours week, avary alternato Sunday holiday, nud-week holidays, and six days holiday with wages an nually.
