On thas.day a strong easterly wind prevailed, which changed at 8 pm to a winterly gale, and this lasted till January 20. On January 28 the Perseus missed the cutter, and a systematis scurch began on January 24 along the coast and the neighbouring islanda by the Perseus, the Espiègle, the Koranja, and the Odin. (Shaikh Shuaib Island is near the Persian coest: and almoet opposite the island of Bahrein, which belongs to Great Britain. The Oman coast is the exner of the Arabian peninsula which projecte into the gulf, Its western side is known se" the pirate Donist.")
On January 27 the Perseus reported to the naval authoritios, and on January 31 telegraphed as follows: Regret very little hope. Search not yet complete on the Oman coast. A later message sinted that a rumour had reached Lings that a Targistan dhow, while gun-running, had an encounter with a naval party of Kalul Island, and escaped after the British off cer in charge had been shot. Nothing further appears to have been heard in connection with this rumour, but an February 10 the commanding officer of the Perseus telegraphed that the best had been given up as lost. The deaths of the crow were assumed to have occurred pa January 20,
