Cromarty, and to construet forts on the rocky cliffs of the Sutors that guard Me entrance, it is 3f interst to note that my far back as 1803′ Mr. Telford, the famous civil engineer, reported, in favour of the Firth being made a regular station for the Fleet The Firth, however, has not been neglected by the Admiralty during all these years. As was stated in last week's Scottish Jetter, its importance was resguised during the Crimean war, when the British Fleet lay in its sheltered waters until the Baltic was tree from ice. More recently, alter, the Dogger Bank outrage, when the Russian Fleet blun dered into a bunch of trawlers with dis nstrous results, it was frem Cromerty that the British Fleet under Lord Charles. Beresford sailed suddenly in pursuit mider scaled orders. But it was prob. ably not until the autumn of 1911 that"| the Admiralty wore impressed with the accessity of fortifying the Sutors. When international relations were strained al- most to the breaking point over the Mor roccan dispute, the cream of the British Navy tay in the Cromarty Firth for two days and two nights auxiously waiting for developments. Sir James Caird, Bart., has made mother gift to Dundes. On Hogmanay -presented to the city a public park in the Lintrather estate extending about 150 zerus; to this he has now made an addition of 113 nerce. When the first gifs was announced, the possibility of there not being sufficient ground for the Jouble purpose of a park and a golf Itse was suggested; any difficulty of this kind is now removed; there will be ample -puen not only for, golf but for football, tennis, and other games, as well as for the ordinary recreation of old and young.
