there will be a large exhibition of modern aeroplanes at Olympia under the auspices nd the Royal Ford Club, and the present exhibition sa Atting Introduction to the larger and more important display which will follow immediately upon the termina“ tion of the Science Mmoun exhibition.
The collection includes many "luteresting prints and other illustrations of early experiments and machines, with portraita of poinsors. The place of fros ballooning in soronsation is reprmented by several models, while there are examples nt the constraction of modern kites and of the uses to which kites have been put, the exhibits in the meteorological action showing their application to the parpono of obtaining observations of the conditions of the appar air. In the dirigible-balloon noction the abjects of greatest interest will probably be the large modal balloon shapes which have been used for determining the nir resistance and the small ákonite models used for finding the best shape of envelope for dirigible balloons: Some of the photo- graphic records of the stream lines of currents passing such shapes are very striking.
The moded of a proposed flying machine patented in 1842 and constructed by Messrs. Henson and Stringfellow in 1844-5, the engine of that model and portions of the Stringfellow fiying machine modal of 1816-8, form a group of objects which reprosent a skilful attempt to solve the problem of flight. The beginning" of modern investigation is marked by the model of Sir Hiram Maxim's #ying machine with one of its engines and one propellar, which he presented to the museum in
1907.
The scroplane part of the collection sims only at showing the main differences, of type and emphasising the.points in con- struction and efficiency which dominate the design of the machines and their accos- atles. The principal models exhibited include the Farman biplane, the Wright biplane, the Santos-Dumont monoplane, d the Bleriot manoplane (cross-Channel type). This last named in illustrated by an actual machine-s "Birdling" mono. | pla-which affords a good opportunity of examining the details of one the earlier succesful forms of monoplans. The engine 158 of this machine has been removed and piced in a position for close inspection, as is also the ease with the "Baby" Wright nackine, which has been leat for this ex-
