POLAR BEAR TRAGEDY.
Tenth and Eleventh Cubs of Barbara Die Through
Her Own Fault.
Barbara, the "Zoo" polar bear, is be- renved once again.
Her two babies, born recently, are both dead, and there are sorrowful scenes in the polar bears' enclosure it Regent's Park.
Ones more Barbara, the elumaica, silliest animal-mother in the whole of the gardens, bas killed ber babies herself-and in a new way this time.
Suffering from a revere thirst she left her cubby house and lapped up pints of water from the pond. She then went eagerly back to her babies-to see if they were still there-and trod on them on the
way.
Barbars did nct look where she was going, and several hundred pounds of dead weight came down on the..two rabbit-like little creatures and crushed the life out of Liners.
This pitiful tragedy occurred during the weak ond. Up till then all had been well the cubs were squealing and, happy, and Barbare kept them clean and well fed.
Sam, the father polar bear, was kept
outside the subby-house-his proper place ashe onco deliberately killed one of his offspring, and everything augured well for
the littlo cubs.
