Great Antiquity of. Skull Found in BRIDGE,
Some interesting facts about the paino lithic buman skull recently found in Sussox were given at a meeting of the Geological Society last night, NS
FOUND BY WORKMEN.
Mr. Charlos Dawson, F.G.S., described how he found these remains of early 10.3.1. He was walking near Piltdown Cpamon, in the parish of Fletching, when he saw some workman digging gravel for farm roads. One of them gave him a fragment of a human skull which they had just discovered and had avi- dently broken up and thrown away. Eo locked for, and subsequently found. other pinces of the skull.
He took thom to Dr. Woodward at the Natural History Museum, and the apesi men was agreed to be of so much im- Iportance that it was decided, as 5000. AS circumstances admitted, to attempt to discover the remaining fragments.
Excavation was therefore begun, sad by the end of September had resulted in the finding of suficient fragments of the akull to restore the whole and also in the recovery of half the lower jaw.

While the diggings were in progress he examined thoroughly the geology of the whole neighbourhood, and came to the eschision that the position of the gravel, and its nature, proved great antiquity.
Dr. A. S. Woodward, Keeper of the Geological Department of the British Museum, said the skull proved to be Tory different from that of any class of man | bitherio met with. It had the steep fore- head of a modern man with scarcely any brow ridges, and the only external ap- pearance of antiquity was found in the seciput, which showed that in this early form the neck was shaped, not like that of a modern mat, but more like that of sa ape.
The brain capacity was only about two thirds of that of an ordinary modern men.
