Mr Bosar Law vigorously attacked the Government, and said that if the procedure to which Parliament was now subjected becomes permanent the House of Commons, as a legislative institution, would be destroyed. He accased Mr Asquith of breaking his pledge, made during the debate on the Parliament Bill, that the Commons would not be deluged with legislation. The Government wanted to destry the veto of the people.

Mr Asquith denied a breach of pledge, and the closure was carried by a majority of 72.
An amendment by Mr Lyttelton to restrict the discussion of the Bill, as it was not sanctioned by the country, was defented by a majority of 74, the figures being greeted with Opposition cheere.
