EXPORTS.
As already mentioned, the total value
of exports in 1911 fell short of that of 1010 by less than £500,000. Considering that for the last three months of the year, export business was at a standstill in the most important collecting centres in Central and Southern hina, it is evident that but for the revolution the export
trade of 1011 would have far exceeded
any previous record. In value silk pro
| ducts bend the list, with a percentage of nearly 25 per cent, of the total, the most important other exports being ten, beans and bean cake, raw cotton, skins. hides and furs, seeds (sanum. etg.), and vegetable oils.
!
The disorganisation of the green tea trade by the sudden enforcement of the Pure Food Act in the United States, to which referchee was made in last year's report, resulted in the reduction of ship- morts to Americs by more than one-half aud this reduction was nearly balanced- by the greatly increfiked export to Botcum for the Transcaspian market.
SHIPPING.
The conditions ebaracterising the ex- port trade in 1911 are elected in the situation of the foreign shipping trade with China, that is to say, the general briskness of traffic dering the first nine - months of the year was sufficiently above | "
the average to prevent the troubles of the last three months frous affecting as in- juriously as might have been expected the profits of the whole year. It sns shown shove that the effect of the revolu- tion en import trade will lint be clearly
seen until 1912, and taken over the, whole of 1911 the imports from the United Kingdom to Shanghai show an increase over 1910.
Beans The Manchurian bonn crop Buffered from plague and flools, but as larger areas were brought under cultiva A noteworthy feature of foreign ship tion the export was about the same asping is the rapid development of the in 1910.
