OMENS OF TITANIC DISASTER.

**20

Some new stories about the loss of the Titutic are told by Mr. Lawrence Boerley in a volume published by Mr. William Heinemany. Mr. Beesley will be reinom. bered as the Dulwich schoolmaster among

the slived who wrate the first cuberent

and reliable account of the disaster pub- lished in the English Press. Many of the

passengers and crew were impressed by "eril omens" at the cominencement of the voyage. First came the narrowly, averted, collision with the New York at Southampton. Then at Queenstown --- As one of the tenders containing pussch- gers and maila neured the Titanic some of those on board gazed up at the liner towering above them, and saw a stoker's shead, block from his work in the stoke- hold below, peering out at them from the top of one of the enormous funnels dummy one for ventilation-that rose mary feet above the highest deck. He had climbed up inside for a joke, but to some of those who saw him ther" the sight was seed for the growth of an "omen," which bore fruit in an unknown dread of dangers to come.

An American lady-may she forgive me if she reads

these lines!-has related to me with the deepest, conviction "and earnestness of manner that his saw the man, and attri- butes the sinking of the Titacis largely

to that.
