Students' Costume Ball at the Botanic

Gardums."

* The “Artists". Bere was a fitting title for the gay function which took place a-the Royal Botanic Gardens on June 19, when the art students of Lansion held a grand costume ball.

The whole of the grounds were illumi dated with fairy lamps and Chinese lan- terns, and, thronged with a crowd of over 800 people dressed in a dazzling pariety of costumes, presented a spectacle which rivalled that to be seen at any of the great art balls in Paris.

The grand entrance took place at bali. past ten, when a cavalcade, headed by a baby elephant bearing Miss Glady Baly, the organiser, in a gorgeous cos tume of which sweeping peacock feathers were the all-dominating featurs, marched round the grounds and entered the great | conservatory. The baby elephant was followed by two nobly caparisoned sloeds, ons hearing a magnificently dressed Earl of Essex and the other a gentleman of the Georgian period. They were follow. ed by an almost endless line of donkey carts driven by gentlemen in velvet cords and poarlies, with wonderfully dressed

women as passengers,
