THE BRITISH POST OFFICE STATE- MENT BY P.M.G.
In the House of Commons, in Com- mittee of Supply, on the vote for the Post Oce, the Postmaster-General made his annual statement, in which he said that the net profit of the department in 1911-12 wna £4,065,000, and it was anti- cipated that this year it would be £4,816,000. They contemplated making tube railway of their own in London, running east, sad weat. He hoped with. in the next few weeks to reduce the post- age rates for parrels sent abroad, and he proposed to introduco en June 1 a system of very cheap night telegrams. Amongst other interesting points, he stated that it was proposed to improve and cheapen telephone communication between Lon don and Paris and Berlin and other places. The frat automatic telephone exchange in England was opened at Epsom on 18th inst., and others were to follow at Caterham and in Tondon. The Post Oce Savings Bank deposita increased £7,500,000 during the year, and there was now a surplus. The dis.
