(From Our Dun: Correspondent.)

LONDON, May 5, PESSIMISM ON CHANA Old China bands and foreign observers in Europe do not view the course of events in China without misgiving. Last week I sent you the comments of the chairman of the China Association, Mr. George Jamieson, and since then several other competent critics have attempted to the entire, Chineso empire, examnino without finding much to give them reason for optimista. In the current Contem. porary Review Dr. Dillon writes on the new problems of the Republies Govern ment, and declares he sees "a seething whirlpool of currents running, in all directions." But he hesitates to pro. phesy as to the future.

At the Central Asiar. Society the other night Mr. Alfred Hippisley, who was formerly in the Imperial Maritime Ser vice for many years, in reviewing the situation was downright gloomy in his forecasts, and Mr. Byron Bremen, in taking part in the subsequent discussion, THE INDIA, LIMITED.
