A NEW NIAGARA
How Tramania is Harnessing Its Water Power.
AMAZITOUS PROJECTS.
A great engineering foat is about to bo bogün in Tasmania, as a result of which the Colony will posites the largest waterfall in the world. The waters of the Crest Lake, which is situated 3,000 fost above nos level, are to be tapped in such a way as to produce a fall of 1,080 feet, 'na compared with the fall of 160 feet at Niagara This great waterfall-will be harnessed so as to operate boga turbines, the capacity of which for producing electrical energy will be limited. only by the amount of water.released from the lake. The cheap power thus provided will be used on a large scale to oporate the sron mines in Northern Taamanin, and the land," copper, tin, and silver deposits of the West, with the result that the Calcay wil soon become one of the leading manu- facturing centres in the Commonwealth.

The new scheme was explained to an Evening Standard representative on Septly ember 7 by Sir Jolin McCall, the agent' General of Tasmania. We have a larg number of lakes situated ona highelovations, 400 he said, and the largest, called the Gren
Lako, is about ainety miles in circum- ference. It is propeesd to put a wall actres the outlet, and to raise by several feet the 80 surface of the lake. The water will then run down the Shaonou riser, which has ita rise in the Great Laku, and from the Shan. 9.00
non rivce a channel will be cat to Cuse 6.26 cirer. The water will drop into the Ouse ....3.10 distance of 1,950 feet. This will be an anormous fail, the largest in the world: "A

This idea of harnessing the water-power of Tusmasin should make the State the manufacturing centro of the Common wealth, as the power will be so much cheaper than coal power, and will not be dependent upon labour. It is proposed also to erect electrical furnaces for the treatment of iron ores in the same way as io Norway and Sweden. The fact that cich iron ores exist in Tasmania has been knows for a considerabla, time, and the Common- wealth Parliament has been repeatedly sp proached to give assistance to the establish ment of the iron industry in Australia, but hitherto no system of protection cr bonuses that would secure its early development has been agreed upon.
