JAPANESE TRAMP
STEAMERS.
Tramp steamers in Japan havo increased considerably in number of late, in con- sequence of the closing of the coasting trade to foreign vessels. The competition of the 'railwaya is so keen, however, that persimistic views obtain as to the coasting service for analler steamers. The thirty eight steamships imported during the seven months ending Ang. 4th, the date of operation of the new trenty, were all of a larger type, ranging between "1.000 to 5,800 tons. The majority of these tramp treamers are engaged in the coasting sorrice, but many are boing placed on foreign services, those on the Shanghai service numbering soven, those on the North China service ton, while those on the Singapore, Hongkong and South Chian services number eleven. In addition to the above the tramp steamers on the Australian and other distant occaD SORTIDER total twelve, with an aggregste tonnage of ! 43,000 an under:-
Manila service:- Shinmei Maru (2,438 ton), Go-Kenkan Mau (2.000 tons), Tokai Maru (9,705 tons), San: Keakan Mars (3,452 tone).
Australian service ! -- Hudson

183,790 tonal, Ni-Kenkon Mara (1,807 tona), Jinbu Maru (5,125 tons), boja Mara (4,075 tons).
Portland service: Shingo Maru (4,131 tour).
