The proposal is mooted of making the latter port the starting point of this important part of the Sino-Japanese trade; a step which would obviously inflict s heary blow to Yokohama's commercial prosperity.
The opinion seems to be gaining ground that Osaka sud Kobe business circles are striving to appropriate to themselves the whole of the Sino-Japanese trade; and that it is with the end in view that they are
now exuiting themselves to the utmost to have Kuke mado he starting point of this
service, and thereby eventually to oust Yokolama eusly from this markës.
Another phase of the matter recently developed the report that the Osaka Shoeun Kartha is a prime instigator in this movemiut, with a view to wresting this traffic from the Nippon Yason Kaisha, which is at present subsidized for their compulsory service.
This move of the Kwanmi business men has evidently put the Yokohama commer- cial public on 18 mettle, and aiready they have clearly shown their full realization of the gravity of the situation.
The Yokohama Chamber of Commerce,
in reply to an official enquiry from the Tokyo authorities, has submitted a state- ment setting forth the necessity for improvements in the service between Yokohama and Shanghai, more especially in the matter of converting the prosent twice-a-week into a thrice-a-week service, and in wereasing the size of the vessels, the more adequately to cope with the over-increasing Sino-Japanese trade.
The Yokohama Keizai Kyokai, (Eco- nomie Association), working in conjunction with the Yo chama Chambers of Com- mercs, are also reported to be up in arms against the Kobe propaganda; and to this end held an extraordinary meeting on Fri day afrem, at the new Municipal Office. At this meeting, statement, prepared by special Committee of the Yokohama Keizai Kyuksi, was submitted for con- sideration. It was similar to that of the Tokohan Chamber of Commieren, only more detailed. The statement was approv ed by the meeting; and a resolution passed to submit the statement to the Yokohama City Council.-Jopen Timu
