AFTER THREE CENTURIES.

A remarkable story appear, in s Paria contemporary of the discovery of the black penzi necklace of Mary Queen of Scots, which disappeard on the 8th February 1817. Wo giza, the story as we find it, says The Globe. A lady cyclist and a mishap with the cord of her pince-nce while touring in an obscare town in Scotland. The lady pulled up at the general shop and tried to replace the cord. The shopkeeper,: not having a suitable cord, told the lady he would take the wire from an old necklace which he showed her. Sho being struck "with it, said she would buy it at the price asked 12 61.—and do ae best she could for a bord. On reaching her lodgings the lady cleaned the pearls, and was struck with the beatity.

The lady's neat procedure was to submit the necklace to an expert jeweller, who pronounced the pearls to be of vory graat vales; and the Paria contemporary, from which we have taken the story says they are worth at least £15,000, adding that on the day of the execution the unfortunate Queen of Scotland d vidod' among her women who attended her ornaments and jewela, including the necklace of black pearls. How it passed into the hands of the ancestors of the shopkeeper, we azo told, is a mystery, and so seems the whole story to us.

THE WICKHAM TESTIMONIAL.

The Rubber Grower' Association, ata banquet in London on July 7, prosented Mr Henry Wickham with an address, a -cheque for a thousand guineas, and an ananity in recognition of his introduction of Pam rubber into Ceylon. Bir John Anderson, who was among the guests, in proposing the toast of the rubber industry, said Brazil was folly alive to the probabi- -lities of plantation rubber. Those who anggested that the price of rubber w uld fall so low as, to make indigenous rubber anmarketable omitted to take the man-. sfacturers into account.-Straits Times,

The Queen sent £10 inwards defraying the cost of the Coronation festivities at

Kingston Vale, Burrey, and in a letter enclosing the cheque her Majesty wished, the inhaintants.to know that she had not forgotten her childhood days when she

· attended the little village church there, to hich she used to drive with her mother, the inte Duchess of Tock, whan rosiding at White Lodge, Richmond Park.
