A census of the population of Hongkong is to be taken on May 20th, and in order that our readers may test their skill în estimating the growth of the population since the last census the Ching Mad is promoting a competition under three hende, saking its subverthers to predict the num bers of (1), The total civil population: (2)

All competitors have to do is to cut out the coupons, fill in their estimate and forward them toour office, with the words Cerises Competition in the top left-hand corner of the envelope. Competitors may send in as many coupons as they desire. A prize will be given for the most correct estrante under each head.. In the case of a the the estimate first open- ed will be adjudged the winner.

A:B. The last complete census of the Colony was taken in 1901, when the total civil population was officially returned at 283,995. In 1900 a partial census was. takes, being confined to the original Colony of Hoogkong and that part of the Now Territory which lies south of the Kowicon range of hills. This partial cansas showed a total civil population of 319,803, bet it should be pointed out that the portion of the New Territory not included in this census possessed a population of 85,011 in
1901.
