A census of the population of Hongkong is to be taken on May 20th, and in orde: that our randers may tort their skill in estimating the growth of the population since the last censor, the Chin. Mail is -promoting a competition under three heads, asking its subscribers to predict the mam bors of), The total civil population : (2), Chinese population: (3) European and American population. We have, for the guidarice of competitora, giren the figures for the last two numbering. All competitors. have to do is to cut out the coupons, their estimate and forward them to our offer, with the words "Census Competition" in the top left-hand corner of the envelope. Competitors may send in as many coupons as they denirs. A prizo will be given for the most correct estimate under each hend.

-The lat complete census of the Colony taken in 1901, when the total civil population was officially returned at 283,901, In 1900 a partial convie was taken, being confined to the original volony of Hongkong and thint part of the New Territory which lies south of the Kowloon range of hills. This partial census showed 'a total civil population of 319,803, but it should be pointed out that the portion of the New Territary- not included in this ecosus possessed a population of 65,011 in 1901,
