About the middle of last month, the Governor of Formosa ordered sweeping operations to be compenced against the Torock tribe of aborigines who recently comitted atrocities upon the visa tuen. The Torvek triba le subdivuju" into the Torowan, Sadoh. Pahu and Priyay tribes, and they have been considered the most ferocious of all the aborigines in the Northern districts. Their population-in. about 800, and they liva in houses built on the slopes of precipitous mountains, thus affording good positions for defence,
The commandent of the troops sent for the chief of tribe before commercing operations. This measure was taken in order to urge the tribe to surrender arnis mid cons under Japanese rule. The chief i I said to have refused to come to the rendezvous.
On the 17th ult. the sweeping operations commenced and the cominandant of the troops reported to the Governor that at 7 a.m. he fired guns from the forts surround- ing the village of the aborigines. One of thu shots made its way to a godown belong- ing to the Paha tribe and destroyed it,
The return of the health of the British Nary for the China Station shows that the squadron employed on the Station doring 1902 consisted of 25 vessels-namely, é cruisers, 3 gunboats, 3 sloups, 10 rivar steamers, 1 despatch veseel, 1 surveying vessel, and 1 receiving ship. In addition to the above, the state of the Naval Hos pitals at Hongkong, Yokoharén, and Wei- hai wui, and of the Naval establishments ou shore at the last-named place, are in ́alsted"fir these zeturns. The returus from all ships and establishments were for the whole year.
