STEAMER FIRE AT KOWLOON.

The Nord Gutted,

There was considerable excitement at Kowloon last evening when the clanging of fire bells, the sounding of alarm syrena, followed by an ominous glare in the sky, indicated that a fire had broken out." The first warning of the occurrence was giqca £ at about 6.40 p.m., and in a very fow minates the flames had leaped up to such an extent that the conflagration could be seen very conspicuously throughout a wide sTun. It was seen that the outbreak was at the Kowlooti Docks, and at first the (des gained ground both on the Peninsula and at Honkong that the dock premises woce ablaze. Later, however, it becams kuown that the firm had broken out on the British steamer Nord, which was lying alongside the construction shela at the western end of the dockyard, for the pur pose of undergoing repairs.

The Nord belongs to the Asiatic Petro- leum Company, and had only been at the dock since. Saturday, having arrived from Foochow on December 27th. She had practically completed her repairs, and at the time of the disaster was fairly empty, save that in ber holds were numerous wooden boxes used for the packing of petrolum in tins. As to how the fire broke but nobody soome to know, but once the flames, got the least hald the devastation #as exceedingly rapid, this being due to the fact that the decks and the holds were pretty well soaked in oil. De sooner, in fact, had smoka beon "son isaning from the bold in the-after-part-of the ship then in an instant the red tard flames shot up iato the air and enveloped the whole of the eteamer alt of the enginerooms Totan. ately the vaseel bad her come to the wind otherwise the flames would have completely swept her front end to end. In answer to the alarms, the Dock fire brigade so00 sp peared on be spor and were followed by the Brigades from Hungbom and Yagmat, while the Government Bre-doat was soon. operating from the other side of the hurning craft. The Dock Erigado and that from Yaumati had their fire engines out, and there was fortunately a plentiful supply of water from the harbour and the malas. The forceness of the fire may be imagined

when is in stated that in a short sonca of time the side platen ofthe vessel were aglow with white hent, the ribs were clearly to be Boon and the rivets in some instances bógan to drop out. By persistent endeavoury, howover, the men were gradually over- me, and the brigades were exceedingly fortunate to being able to condoe the fire to the Nas, I sad holds and the superstruct ura at the aft part of the vessel. This evotion of the steamer, though, was com piately gutted.

The Nordnes to be particularly IIT-inted, for 16 was only some few weeks back that aho caught fis at Canton, and bus for the timoiy work of private Ore Joses would bare born completely burnt out

While a description of Hall's Distemper is no doubt superfluous, we bag remind Architects, Builders, and Householders of the following special points.

It is made in two qualities-The Inside quality is tha

scientific substituto far wall-paper; it makes a more artistic, practical, and healthier wallt covering altogether,

The Uutside quality in fully weather resisting, it can be used on wood work,

work, brick work, stone, ete, and can be printed or varnished.

Hall's Distemper no doubt owes a great deal of its popularity to its case of application and great covering power, resulting in economy in both material and

labour costa. 1 evt. will cover double the surface of 1 cwt pure white lead, and

it dries evenly, overcoming the difficulty of obtaining a uniform tint an plain wells.

There is no woll covering so hygienic as Hall's Distemper. It contains powerful germicide and when applied it is instant death to all insect life. It washable after thres weeks by being lighty sponged with warm water.

Special Note. Hall's Ditemper should not be confused with the many so call Washable Distempers now offered for sale, nor with that class material which requires elaborate preparation of walls. Hall's Distemper unique preparation with entirely distinct advantages, and is made only by dies Brothers & Co, Ltd, Ball, and London Sale Agents for South China
