The Cause of the Disaster.
A good deal of speculation has been Indulged in as to how H.BL.A. Bedford came to pile bersalf on Queipart Island. Ib has been astmed, says the Shanghai Mer cury, that fog must have prevailed, or an error of judgment; but it now appears quite clearly that neither of these was the cure. What actually happened was that the Bed- ford had fixed her position correctly at 8 p.m. on the evening before the disaster
and had set ber-course-in ap to pass about 23 miles of the well known reef, such n wide berth being given on account of the henry south-west swell that was being experienced at the time, knowing that this would cause the vessel to set inahora soms. "what. This awell, which had been caused by a recent typhoon gave rise to an insal current which carried the vessel 29 miles out of her course in a run of about 168 miles.
It appears to be almost a miracle that the rest of the fleet did not alen meet with the same fate, as the Minotaur, was astern: of the Bedford only 4 mile, and inside. whilst the Kent was only saven miles astern of the Minotaur. This appalling from realization "possibilty.
