course; and now Ernest Barry has tried to Tanquish Richard Arost, the New Zeala der, who had already held the title after three contests. This third attempt also has been unsuccessful. In accordance with. the general expectation at Livingstone. Barry lost by two lengths.
Barry, who is now twenty-eight years of age, began his rowing career in 1800, in which year he was second in the race for the Putney Cont and Badge; and in the following year he won this. Three years later he won the Daggett Coat and Badge, and in 1902 and the two next years won the Open Sculls at Stripes. But his chief performance was his defeat of George Towns for the English Championship in 1908. In that race Towns led to Harrod's bat Barry always had his pace, and going in front shortly passing Hammersmith, Mon easily by no lengthe. The tide waa so good that Barry accomplished the wonderful time of 21min. 12 2osoc, which has never been approached in any sculling macs over the championship course.
