North and Central China Suffer.

Native advices from the north of China advise that there has been a series of fooda which have devastated a large tract of ..ountry. They appear to have fallen in

one from the north right down through the centre of China as far as Chibkiling. In Shansi for some time rice as well as other cereals has been very dear, and it is now feared that prices will still further rise. Sometime ago a tao of grain could be bought for one thousand six hundred cash.

·To-day two thousand is demanded.

At a place called Shap Chau during the atli noon one of the most devastating hail storms etter known passed over the district, The hail stones are said to have been ay big- as cups and basine! Innonse quantities of rain also, fell, so that the water rose: verywhero to a great height and numbers of men and cattle were drowned. But this was one instance of the disasters, which have come upon the province as a whole.

The ante sort of thing is reported from Shantung. There the land is somewhat) poor, and much of it marshy, so that coltivation is not very remunertise. Bat in some parts of the provines min fell in catenatly for three or four days and nights so that whole tracts of land were covered with water and turned into inland lakes. The corn fields were altogether immersed and in same places not a grain of whont remains, so that the people are in dire

distress.

In Hoon the results appear to be even worse, from the

the sixth, and oven throughout the dogs days, when it is usual that the weather is hot and saltry, there has boou nothing but incessant rain. Tadeod, during thin eixth month the rain was heavier than evar. It rained day after day, and there was no exception in any part of the Pra vince. There is no part that has not been turned into pends sed inland lakes. The position of one of the gates of the city is rather low, Irrean the capital city-and so all round it is like a river, and the situation in quite dangerous." It would appear, indeed, from the general descrip ting that the dinastor is very serious throughout the entire province.

In the Chinkiang province the out- Took is no better and the calamity no 1069. The south-eastern part of the province appear to have suffered most.

This steamer connects with the steamer returning from Macao at 5 F.3 First-class Euro by steamer leaving at 1 F.. and returning with excursion stammer at 77... 34. Single Faro also St.
