RAMBLING NOTES,

The news that, triakles in from the north sivas one the impression that the probabill- tles of our over sealog the county araisar Bedford in Hongkong harbour again are very romoto. Ons report speaks of the ramel being half full of water and this is not surprising if it is true that she ran on the Samning rock while undergoing her full speed trials. The momentum of such a vassel moving at ordinary speed would be sufficient to do great damage, bet strik- tag the rocks at her highest must have literally torn the heart out of her.

*

We are all genuinely sorry in Hongkong that much a terrible disaster should have befallen such a stauneb, trim vessel, but more particularly for her Captain, eßcors and men. To thou the blow must be very avero. Sallerman grew vary attached to their floating homes and when misfortune bafalls, such as this, words fail to adequate ly express all the thoughts which surge up

and overwhelm them.

RAMBLER

A FALSE REPORT.

From information which has come into the hands of the Hoogkong polies it now appears that the piracy of a juk reported as having taken place while the craft was sailing from Biss Bay to Hongkong has nover occurred at all. It is supposed that the junk was captured by the Chinese Salt Commissioners because of an attempt to amuggle salt into China, the usual practico in such cases being to confiscate the junk and cargo and release the crew. It will do. remembered that the Aren story was that pimtas armed with rarolyors and choppers boarded the junk, imprisoned the crew in the hold and later landed them at Lantao,

The greatest sufferer, however, is the unfortunato Captain. We know the Island, then making off with the junk. Draconian law of the son in these matters This statement now come to have boon And therefore we realiss, though only pare inreation. iendsmen, bat it.isans for him. Ho has our deepest sympathy in this hour of tribu- Jation and I hope I'may be pardoned when, I express the hope that there may still be happy days of "clear shining" ahead for bire.

The natatorial esports of Hongkong have gone north to give Shanghai a taste of their quality. They will have some vory redoubtable swimmers to encounter in the Tarious contests, while the conditions will be a trife different to what they are used to in Hongkong Still I fogi stra they will be certain to do honour to the Isle cf

Esco the China Ma is again offering a silver cup for the Swim Across the Harbour, and I hope that there will be as usual a good struggle in this very sporting event. It will be a fitting close to what has been a very pleasant aquatic senson."

The Chiras Mal race is open to every body in the Colony whether mombots of sporting clube or not, no restrictions being placed on anybody who caren to enter. am teld that shore aro aeroral expert lady ,swimmers in the Colony, who would dearly like to tackle the Barbour Swim if a nuco for members of the gentler sex was stranged. Perhaps the Sporting Editor of the China Mail might take up the idea and so if such an event can be arranged... It would excite s good deal of interest I am sure and bring down thousands to the Praya.

The summer is gradually worrying through, and on the whole it has not been unpleasant. We have been remarkably immune in regard to typhoons, and yet hara had but very few unbearably hot nights the bane of Hongkong in the dog days. We have a lot to be thankful for.

I overheard a choice bit of sarcasm the other day which was totally lost, I fear, on the abject object at which it was directed, It was over in Kowloca where a patient looking sailor-man managed to secure at the Ferry the slowest and most decrepit rickaba man on the stand. The coolie had long since left his ambling days bebind, but for all that he ovidently, could not be ... persuaded to give up such a profitabic was of earning a living. So he started off with his fare at a pace little botter thana chwi, The man stood it for a while with exemplary patience, and then be unburdened bis soul in the following fashion Oh please don't fiice, no flies boy; lake your uwu blasted time, its only Saturday aftorucon." A SHOCKING OCCURRENCE.

It is the custom in Canton in the seventh Chinese month for people, especially women and maidens, to proceed to the White Cloud Hills, They do not go specially to escape the heat of the plain,"bat in order to worship one of their popular patron saints, whose name is Cheung Sin, or the Fairy Cheung. The women go in crowds as they think there is safety in numbers. On the afnotoenth of the month a party woro proceeding thither, not domaing of trouble. Suddenly they were pounent upon by six rien, robbers, who barred the way, and robbed the women of all the property they had on their persons. It is said that the robbers even took the women's clothes

of them half-naked by the roadside so that they huddled together bowed down with shame. However, some of the older women, half clothed as they were suddenly caused themselves, and followed the cob bers, shouting as they went, and when they reached a place named Siu Pak."a farmer residing in the vicinity rushed out and tried to intercept the robbers. The latter shot him dend. But by this time the neighbourhood was roused and passion famed high, as that it was determined to arrast the villians, though it meant death to those who took part in the fray. Firs arms ware used, and this time one of the robbers was shot... At the pad of the scrimane the people managed to armat the retaining five mos, and after they had taken back all the booty, and given it to the women, they tied the robbers together and marched them off to the games that they might be placed in safo custody. So what ordinary soldiers often are unable to do, and frequently are afmid to attempt, the farmers and the villagers, though at the ecat of one lifa, managed to affect.
