THE SHANTUNG BUTCHERIES.
We recently printed a detailed account of the alleged butcheries committed among the population of Shantang, who rose in agitation when they were compelled to put up more taxes than they thought they ought to pay. The alleged atrocities were perpetrated by the Chinese soldiers who were sent to suppress the local trouble. It appears now, from some recent letters from Peking, that the people are not prepared to take all they received without some kind of protest to heid-quarters, and at the same time, there is demand that the official who was responsible for the sending forth of the soldiers should punished What will follow remains to be seen. Meanwhile, a large number of refugees from the stere of trouble hava arrived en masse in Poking and have taken up their quarters there with a view to seeking admission into án official yaman, so that they can lay the truth of the affair before the highost auth- arities. These Shantung refugees found their way first of all to the quarter where their fellow provinciale reside and carry on business. By them the refegers were wili-

On the other hand, there is not wanting evidence that those things are daprecated in the pital, for the Government knowu well enough that such donds only increase the
