THE CANTON OPIUM MONOPOLY.

Interesting Correspondence.

KON. SIR EXWATE'S AUCURIATUL PROTEIN.

We have boon favoured with copies of the official correspondence which followed the attempt of the Chuton authoritios. to create a monopoly, in taw opium to the great injuryof furoignimporters. -Numorous tologianis and letters were despatched to British Government vilicials at Canton, Poking and Indis, as well a united stand being taken by the Hongkong British mer- chants concerned, the Hongkong Chamber of Commerce and the Hongkong Government. It was not without grant tromble that the petitioners convinced the authorities of the illegal character of the Chineso proposals, but orentually they succeeded in getting their views endorsed.

The first step was taken on April 23rd, when the Bougkong British inerchants wired H. B..'s Consul-Genel at Canton (Mr J. W. Jamíason) as follow:

Merchants report Canton Authorities imposing tax on raw opium mix dollars per ball roummencing Monday kindly take stops prevent, imposition illegal taxation Sas

The Consul-General's reply, dated two days later, stated:-" With reference to your telegram of the 23rd instant, I bag to infurm you that I have not learned officially of any new tax which it is proposed to impose on raw opium. So long, however, as auch a tax is not lavind differentially, I
