The report of the Religious Tract Society shows aqually good work done. The sales of English and other publications, not including Chinase, total $3,412.50, against $3,315.17 of the previous year. As most of these publications have a distinctly religious character, it in ob- RAILWAYvious that a considerable number of such books are "needed to meat the needs of the Colony during any 'one year. Sales of Chinese books and tracta amount to 84,413.86 as against 84.485.42 for 1998. At first sight there would appear to be an 5.8. decrease here. It is not so, however seeing that special arrangements have been made 9.8 during the year by which Chinesa preachers, sa and Christina congregations have been able to purchase sets of book and even librarice at a very greatly reduced price. Indeed through the generosity of the Parent Committee in London setts of Chris tian books worth $10.00 have been aeld to native preachers for the pop percorn price of 81.00 and likewise fioraries have been arranged for native Christian Societies for very shall sumus.

orarta general control over the Society's work in China. It is to be noticed, more- over, that there is a general move on foot to federate all the Tract Societies now at work in China, which will give each one freedom to work its own internal plans, but will generally prevent overlapping, and j vaderselling, and in other ways promote economy. Only the initial stages of the new smalgamation have as yet been effected. Unity and co-operation are in the air, and every one is wishful to give and tske, and willing to try compromise that clower unity may be effected.
Changes among the workers have born the order of the day, The Rev. T. W
Puree, who has served on both Committees so long and so devotedly, has through ill health left the Colony for a time. Mr Bosshard, too, who has had per ansl direction of the actual working of the depot, his gone to Europe on furlough, and his place has been supplied by Mi 6.7. Haan. Ausual the Parent Societies af both branches have liberally assisted in providing the heavy working expenses, such as rent, and the payment of the foreign superintendent. It is obvious that. it would be impossible to meet these claims tramt the income of our turnover. Yet it
would be a great misfortune were the time to, come that this good work could not go on, and it is more than likely that Hong-
