Among British troops the death-rate pr thousand in 1909, ras Let 8.23, as crist pared with 9.1, in 1908 and 17.19 in the decade 1884-1909. Ta corretoration of these facts the Chinwangian May 28, Coal, Carsest

number of invalids went hobe las fallen considerably. Thas as cumpared with five years ago the number of officers invalided has dropped from 119 to 40; of women and children from 276 to 50; of acn-commission ed offers nud men from 2,145 to 54 ; and of insanos from 75 to 50. These facts are eminently encouraging and will be specially welcomed in England in circles from which the oficors and men of the British garrison are drawn. For the causes which have led up to this remarkable amelie ration in the sanitary state of the European ry in India the foremost place must be given to the evidently whole-hearted

ассермесе by all ranks of the principles of wholesome living in wholesome surroundings, a long urged by those whose technical knowledge rande it clear that radical changes were necessary

THE INDIAN TROOPA.

In no sphere of activity are greater changes for the general good noted than in that of cantonment administration, and indirectly much of the present good health of British troops mast he credited to the sustained co-operation which is manifest between the cantonment magistratex, com- manding officers and the medical officers. The Egaree quoted warrant the anticipation that not only will the high standard now attaized be improved upou, but that it is not too much to hope for even better retuma. The figures for Last year relating to the Indian army are not yet available, but the effects of better knéwledgo und wider activities in the directions of snitary effort will probably show corresponding re- ductions in both disease incidence and mortality among the Indian troops.
