CHINESE ENTERPRISE.
Some months ago an order was placed with a British Firm in Ainoy for a dredger for use up the West. River, between the
towns of Chich-Be and Chang-Chow-F. An influential and representative com. mittes of business mer and officials, headed by Thotai Ho of Chang-Chow, calling itself the "Chang-Chow. Relief Works Burnau," after dus deliberation, decided to attempt the dredging of the river, and thus try and do away with the disastrous floods, that have occurred of late years. Steam launches run from Amoy to Chiob-Bo, a distance of about 20 miles, but passengers for the capital city, Chang-Chow, another 10 miles further up, have to disembark and travel the remaining distance by shallow draft rative boats, drawing. at most 24 inches. The time taken to caror these ten miles is usually about 4 to 5 hoars, and if the wind should be against one, 8 of baura is not out of the way. The average breadth of the river 5 miles from Chioh-Be is 80 yards, and the average depth about £ to 9 feat in dry, weather. As the dry season lasts more than half the year, the river is annavigable to any steam vessel during that period, and during the other half of the year, heary torrential rains cause the river to flood very easily, and Onise-nu,then to subside as quickly again. And in food time the strength and force of the current make it dangerous for boats of any
