THE RACES,
FIRST DAY'S EVENTS
Under "most favourable conditions the Hongkong Jockey Club Race Meeting far 1910 opened at Happy Valloy to-day. usual, the business concerns of the Colony shut doors from An arly hour in the forenoon and almost everybody threw the caros. and worries of com. mercialism to the winds for a while and gave themselves over to patronizing the sport of Kings" The morning opened dull and somewhat close, but as the dar wore on the sun

The various Mr Dryandust's Soromís, 10st Ribs stands were alive with keen followers of the sport, the enclosures full of lita and animation, while the centre of the course was packed with the customary gathering of Orientals, whose excitement we just as keen as that of shair Wasters brethren. The profuse display of bunting gave an added brilliance to the scene, while the numerous pretty areations worn by the ladies provided a seeded torch of reliaf to the otherwise sombre-head crowds which filed the stands and gathered inside the enclosure. The whole picture set in a beautiful natural valley surrounded by bowering hills, it was a sight such as cannot probably be seen elsewhere in the world. His Excellency the Governor (Sir F. D. Lugard) and party arrived and took up their positions in their special box just after the conclusion of the opening race, being accompanied by the Japanese admirala. A most exciting race. After starting false the ponios emerged from the bushes in rather struggly fashion, Maple Tree loading with Dwarf Rose second. The visiting Japanese naval officers lunched with His Excellency the Governor and other stewards of the Jockey Club.
As the result of such an unduly long spell of dry weather the course was hard and dry, the going therefore being fast. Some splendid times were made the mile by Little Gem Boso in the Victoria! spotting winners" was not at easy. In consequence the placed bet tings covered a wide choice of animal, with the result that the pari-mutuel paid some decent dividends. The sweeps, too, were largely patronised; in fact, there. was always a big gathering round the booths.
Only one circumstance marred the brightness of the pecasion and that was the absence of MFH.. Mody who has many a time lod in a winner. This gap was oc casioned owing to the recent death of his 'eldest son. As a result Mr Mody's stand was bare and dell instead of being gady draped in the blue and white of the Buzey atable, while the accustomed hospitality which the owner usually lavished on his friends was missing. Everybody felt the ahsance of so well known figure and the cause thereof called forth general gym pathy,

In was seen that Johnstone had the rails, Rose being second and Maple Tree coming on hard for third berib Belgian Chief, on the outside, was making a good race. The ponias all came in in a bunch. Just before reaching the post: Vida shot ahead with Maple Tree and won by half length from Silverton, another half length separating the lactor from the Chief. Sorosis was fourth and the Bose, one of the favourites, only fifth. Time:-.
