AMOY, December 30.
ATHLETIC.
Once more Christmas has come and gone, and with is the Annual Walking Match 'open to all Members of the Amoy Custome Club. This race took place on Christmas moming in perfect weather, the only regrettable thing being the magredua- ber of gentleman walking. The s'art was at 9.30..., six men getting of The race very soon devolved itself into a duel between Messrs Veir and Berthier, and these two were never separated by far all the seven miles. However. Veir mannged to maintain his lead and came in first in 1 hour. 9 minutes, and 40 seconds, follow- 26 seconds later by Berthier. The next home was M. M. Pederson in 1 hour 15 minutes, and 35 seconds, and then P. Cow.

Information laid before the High Council of Indo-China show that there are. eight coal mines under development in Tonkin, with an output of 310,000 French
tons in 1908 of which 921,600 tons were exported. Of these the mine at Hougay cut the best figure. The total outturn in 1909 is set at 850,000 tons. Blizing activity in other directions led to the export of tin and tungsten to the amount of 200 tons in 1900 against 160 in 1908. Zinc exported in the present year amounted to 47,000 to against 10,000 in 1903. The value of the minerala mained na regarda Tonkin alone reaches nine millions of franes this year sgainst seven millions in 1908.
