JOHN STUART BLACKIE.

(From Our Scottish Correspondens.)

Entah, October £8. The "Lethers of Juba "Stuart Blackie to his, Wife," with for welier latter to his. parents, odited by his nephew, Dr Archibald Stodart Walker, is the book of the week. There may be a variety of opinions regard- ing the place which the "picturesque Athenian should be accredited among the celebrities of his century; there can de none concerning his individuality. He was a man of mark-or- remark,-according as people judged him in a superficial way, or apperised his worth by higher standards. What he did was of less importance than what he was, a test from which very few men would come out so cleanly; and what- over his eccentricities, at the root of him splendid sanity. Perhaps no man me nearer to the superb optimism of Browning's appeal, Gro old along. with me; the best is still to be; "or as Blacko Himself has written, "The only reality is Joy.".

ever

This volume is the best full length portrait we have yet had of Blackie as a man and a scholar; there are no suppressions ; and TIL ADDRESSES for above; IWASAKL'it is to be confidently asserted that for Oodos:-ÀI, ABO 8th Ed., Western Union, many years do more delightful store of random recollections has been published." It comes at an appropriate time, for this is. John Stuart Blackie's centenary,"
