There may be a variety of opinions regard- ing the place which the "picturesque Athenian should be accredited among the celebrities of his century; there can de none concerning his individuality. He was a man of mark-or- remark,-according as people judged him in a superficial way, or apperised his worth by higher standards. What he did was of less importance than what he was, a test from which very few men would come out so cleanly; and what- over his eccentricities, at the root of him splendid sanity. Perhaps no man me nearer to the superb optimism of Browning's appeal, Gro old along. with me; the best is still to be; "or as Blacko Himself has written, "The only reality is Joy.".
