hopes of the report for 1907. At first sight the net value-Bk. Tls. 103,608,530-of the trade in 1908, as compared with HE Tls. 106.782,947 in 1907, would suggest, that nde had "marked time", rather than re trogressed; but a closer analysis reveals the fact that while foreign imports-represented by Hk. Tia. 30,753,077, as compared with H. Ths. 20,894,609 in 1907-îve min tained their position, native imports have been increased by "some million taels, while exports of local origia have decreas ed about 7 million taels. In other words, native imports and exports of local origia have changed places in 1908, as compared with 1977. Although the shrinkage in ex- porta is mainly due to a short production af silk-the direct outcome of adverse) climatic conditions,it is satisfactory to Zote that the items, with the exception. perhaps, of rice, which swell the value of nativa imports are cot such as to suggest! decreased busing power.
