Mayer, licensee of the Colorint Hotel, Tai Sing. compradore, of Queen's Road: and Chun Canug, compradore, of Arsenal Stroet, the two latter. holding grocer's Beanser, Defendanta were also charged under the Liquor License Ordinance with selling adulterated brandy.

Mr F. B. L. Borley, Crown Soliciter, prosecuted in all the cases; Mr John Hastings defended Tai-Sing and Chuen Ching; and Mr P. S. Dizon, from Mr R. A. Harding's office, was for Mrs Meyer.

Mr Hastings, defending Tai Sing, said the brandy bought from him by the polica

officer way, sed as a cooking brandy, and was bought by his clients from a German firm with whom they had dealt for several years. It had been admitted by the pro- secution that the sample produced was not deleterious to health, and further it had been admitted by them that the article and not been adulterated by any undue propor tion. The only complaint was that the spirit of the brendy was made from sub- stances other than the juice of the grape Ho submitted that alcohol could be derived from many sources. The prosecution had no sight whatever to say that only sub- atances derived from the grape were to be called brandy.

Evidence was then called: Mr F. Brown, the Government Analyst, giving his report un the analysis of the samples, and a chemist from Musare A. 8. Wataon & Co..

being called by the defence.

The hearing was again adjourned.
