ACCINATIONS AGAITAT A STEPMOTHER, The criminal court at Sourabaya has just tried an atrocio murder caste in which a stepmother, Mario Tigot, by manie, stood charged with so ill-treating her besimad's daughter. eight years of age, that the child! died of the inju ion received. The evidence showed that, from May to August 1908. the woman struck and beat the child repentedly un the head, face, arms, brick, legs, and body inhumanly with quetans, sticks, broom- handles, riding whip, and pieces of fire wood. Sometimes, the litthe girl was kicked and thrown violently down on the comment floor. Her heal at one time was dashed against a wall with such force that two teeth were kencked out, and uhu be same unconscious for two days. Besides this she was stinted in her foud, and was kept shut up for months in a narrow closet. The child gradually grew worse and could not walk. In August last, the end came when the stepmother struck her on the head with a pices of wood which fractirred the skull, and, it is alleged brought about har death.
The stopmother admitted striking and heating 1be child, but said it was done for the girl's own gond, se she was stubborn ¦. and intractable. The father was only at home at nights, his duties as tramway conductor lasting from 4.30 s.m. to 7 p.m. daily. So little had he to say in the

Sourabay delivered judgment in the case,
of Mario Bigot. The court found her guilty,
