The Japan Chronicle in the course of a recent article gives a lucid explanation of the reason why Japan has come to have so many names. Says our contemporary>
The word "Nippon," or “* Nikon," is no more than the Japanesa reading of the two Chinese characters. The actual. pronunciation in the Canton dialect is "Jatpun," which is certainly nearer to the accepted sound Japan" than Nihon.") If the latter word were the original Japan- į ese name, baru might be some semblanca bf reason in the proposal to adopt it in Foglish, but this is not the case. Japan had several native names, one of the earliest being **Toyoushiwara-Mizuho-no-ituni," and later | the name "Yamnto," originally that of one province, was extended to the whole coup. try. When the Japanese began studying Chinese literature they noticed references to au castern land called B A, “Origin of the Sun" or Land of the Rising Sun, which was scertained to refer to their own country. The idea expressed in the characters pleased them apparently, for they translated them into Japanese- Bi-no-moto, which became another nainė for Japanese. Later they attempted to pronounce them dola chinoise...“Jatpun " -and arrived at a sound something like "Jitpen," which became converted into "Nitpon," but owing to the difficulty the Japanese and in pronouncing the conson- ant é, that sound was dropped and the word became Nihmm." Inter it was thought slipahod to drop the sound of the tand it. was restored, but with the inevitablo ibila tion which turns the Japanese t into las or chi-hence zitsu or nicht.. Intcombination with hon the syllable was then modified in the usual way and the word "Nippon": resulted. Both forms are used at the pre- sent time. Thus it will be seen that the Japanaso—abood—–—is merely a corruption- of the true sound, following on the fines of Japanese phanetics. The English Innguage is not guided by Japanese rules of phonetics, so that if retained a pro- Bunciation of the word which accorded with its own liwe, while, curiously, at the same time being a nearer approximation to the actual sound of the character than the Japanese version.
