Public attention is being directed to the question of the condition of the country's navy yards, as the outcome of a startling aories of exposures in the current issue of McClure's Magazine. Some time ago, in riew of the proved worthlessness of the New Orleans and Pensacola yaris, Mr Roosevelt ordered them to be abundanod. The new Secretary of the Navy, Mr Meyer, has, however, countormanded this crder. and it looks as if fresh appropriations might be asked for on account of these establishments.

are rather surprising. It has been shown. for example, that the annual cost of the up-keep of the New Orleans yard rans in the neighbourhood of $100,000, while the value of the work dann therein rarely axceeds 81,000 annually. $300,000 was recently appropriated for in provements, and the pay of officers and mon stationed there is in exose of $60,000. Pensacola has a somewhat better record, but ovon there the amount of work done is in the proportion of one dollar to thres expended on maintenance.
The naval officers are not taking these criticisms with the meekness that their critics might desire. Mr Herbert L. Batterice, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, remarked sarcastically in the course of an
