thankful to be alle report this, A number of second-hand Type-

for Bome considerable improvements

the furniture of the Home have bear effected. A much needed hot-water ipparatis has been introduced and worke well. Naw mattresses have replaced the old ones throughout, and many new spring bottoms have been added to the bodle, which render them more comfortable. 60 bodsiends have been donated to the Home by the Committee of the Royal Naval Canteen sur 4 billiard table cloths by the Hongkong Club. There have been sundry ather improvements in the furniture of the Home.

The Year's Income-as shown on the accompanying Balance Sheet-amounts to $18,321.20 ns against 89,705.87 in 1907. Doriations and balances from Concerts and Pionics have begafitod the Home to the. extent of $1,582.07 se against $721.03 last year. One of the Concerts was arranged by the Manager, and given by the band of H.M.S. King Alfred, ruslising $34, inclusive of $160 given by R. Shewan, Esq. The other was due to the initiation of Mies Millington, but was arranged and given by Mrs Belitis, the proceeds amounting to 658.80 inclusive of 825 sent by the Hon. F. H. May, OM.G. The thanks of the Hope Committee are hereby londered to all who so kindly assisted at these concerts, and also to the Committee of the Theatre Royal, who placed their building at our disposal for the nomina? sum of one dollar.

Against the increased income we have to raport a much heavior expenditure than

SOCIAL

Last year

The Social side of our work has been watched over as in fermer years. The presence of the Manager and his wife on the premises has led to the Home being more cleanly and homelike than before, and ensured that the men should receive a personal welcome which they naturally look for and much appreciate.

More than 12,000 men have slept in the Home during the year. The game of billiards is as popular as ever, and the tabler are continually in use, whilst the Reading Room with its supply of daily, weekly, illustrated and religious newspapers, and a small library, forms a rotrest for those who are so inclined.

When it is remembered wlut sro the temptations of sailors and soliders away from Home, it will be seen that this side of our work is a boon to the mon, and gives us the opportunity of getting into dloss contact with them and providing a sub-

titute for their real home.

SPIRITUAL

We rejoice to be able to say that this side of our work is muccessful. Several Temperance Societies hold weekly meetings in the Home, while the weekly Class, Prayer and Gospel meetings are very well attended. We can point to a goodly num- her of mon who, through these gatherings, have. Leon brought from, lives of six and shame and are now manly, straightforward and godly.

No attempt whatever is made to prosely. tize; we can truly say we are the friends of all and the enemies of none."

RETROSFECT AND PROSPECT. This work has been carried on now for sight yours. It cannot be doubted that the Home fills an important place and supplies a noodio the life of Hongkong. The eristained devotion of the maribers of the Committee to the well-being of the Home, and the, interest shown in the work by many frienda in the Colony, is greatly appreciated by the rainistar in charge.

Yet there remains much that ought to be done, and done soon to make the In- stitution areal home away from home, The interior of the building badly needs
