HONGKONG RACE MEETING.

TO-DAY'S RACING.

**Who goes mcing1". Ta judge by the attendance at the Happy Valley to-day, when the first day of the 1909 race meeting ander the auspicica of the Hongkong Jockey Club was held, nearly everybody in the Colony, follows the "sport of Kings." From a very early hour this morning the approaches to the Course were thronged and "All the fun of the fair" prevailed under most favourable conditions;

After a false start all the field got away splendidly with Seafoam leading. Game Chick second and Rubber Treo last, Sea- Foam and Hubber Tree raced neck and neck and Jubilee took the load at the bend, The race hoine was an exciting one, Jubilee Ross just winning by a nock from York Rosa, with Seafoam third.

The morning broke dull and misty and at nine o'clock, when heavy sea fog rolled in mud smothered the island, there was very little indication of the wonther clearing up. But matters had improved considerably by eleven o'clock and by the time the first esddling bell rang the sun had begun to pierce the clouds scd bits of bice sky were showing. The temperature was rather high, and during the afternoon the clouds gathered again, lying very low on the hills, but they interfered very little with the general gaiety.

The course was in excellent condition and the stands, gaily decorated with flags and bunting, altogether prescuted a spectacle that was very whimated. The sport was keen and interesting, more particularly as there was a larger amount of uncertainty than in Former years is regards the horses. This no doubt added sest to the opening day and made the "spotting" of "dand certa" all the more oxciting.

His Excellency Sir Proderick Lugari, accompanied by Miss Henniker, Captain P. M. Taylor, A.D.O., and Captain Simons arrived soon after noon.

The band of the Buffs was in attendance during the day and rendered several interesting items. ·
