Lerner, Dacomber 15. The China Socisty is clearly advancing. Its winter session began with the lectures by the Chinese Minister sad Me Ivan Cheng, Sir Robert Hart in the chair, and as I recently reported the attendance was a record one for the Society's meetings in the Caxton Hall.

On Thursday, however, the lectura on "Chins in its medical aspects" by Dr J. Cantlie, attracted quite as large a number, and the prospects for a scosssful season Basemtherefore assured, Sir Patrick Manson, the eminent specialist on tropical diseases, was in the chair. In introducing the loo- tarer he spoke of Dr Cantlis's special knowledge of the subject sad the luminous 3 way in which he was wont to describe hia experiences and set forth ́the store of his 83

knowledge. There were excellent lantern | illustrations of the lecture.

Dr Cantlio started by making the Chinese present not to imagine for a moment that in mentioning certain things as striking to the Westers mind he intended to cret any alur upon the Qalental, Un the contrary he had a deep respect for the 4 Chinese intelligence and he might say at 17 the outset that if it came to a comparison of brain equipment, he had measured many Chinese brains and many Western brains aleo, the Chinese certainly had the Largest brains of sny race in the world.

In another case he was called many miles to a patient suffering from a very bad and fostering wound. On arrival he noticed on his back a rice bow and asked why it was there.
