RICE NEEDED FOR KWANG-

TUNG.

The Viceroy of Canton has telegraphed to the Viceroy of the Two Liang asking that i special cargoes of rice be forwarded to Kwangtung at once. Ho has also seked that theso cargoes be allowed to pass out without paying any likin duties. The de- struction by the recent floods is said to be the reason for the special appeal. Very much rice was destroyed, as is well known, and now the pinch is being fult. Viceroy Tuan has complied with the request. There is however some dificulty about the weight of the Shok. This word indicates usually One hundred and sweaty catties. But in some places it means one hundred and forty cattier. As usual, in China, there is no standard that is accepted by the people"
