ONE OF THES TROUBADOURS.

HONGKONG PHILHARMONIC

SOCIETY.

An Excellent Concert.

If an illustration were needed of the musical capabilities Mr Douman Fallor, F.R.C.O., L.R. A.M., it was .givers last night at the concert promoted by the Hongkong Philharmonic Society. There he appeared in the triple role of composer, conductor, and executant. As the musicnt head of the Society Mr Fuller has aszar pared buncelf in training the forces at his command in a most thorough going manner, and the obvious delight of the audience was at much an acknowledgement of his

success in this direction as it was a com- pliment to the taste displayed in the selec tion of such a capital programme.

Altogether, including the orchestra, there were about 80 performers, and the massed work was, on the whole, sriep, bright, and polished. That there were occasionally de- partures from this happy state no critic will deny, but when this was the caseit was more there it of enthusinan Gan the outcome of wrong musical conception. In the choral work the parts were not too well balanced, there being the customary happening in such societies of the base and of soprano over-weighting the other sections in point of number. But a fairly good equality of tone was produced, except in the opening itom, the unaccompanied part-song Old Neptune," (A. Gaul), in which the in- equality of parte was apparent. Later, however, the chorus covered itself with glory by the magnificent manner in which the other numbers were given. With

an orchestral accompaniment written by Mr Denman Fuller, they rendered in almost faultless style a choral stranga ment of Schubert's lovely song, "To Sylvia." This was probably the most

of enjoyable item the evening, while following close on it was the attractive and deverly conceived choral faulesŝa. by G. F. Vincent, introducing ten old English sire. These two numbers were all that could be desired, and thoroughly deserved the marks of approciation which their rendering earned."

The purely orchestral items were charm- ingly given, both being drawn from the same zonroe-Elgar. The first was a Chanson de Matin, the delightful harmony of which was beautifully interpreted, while the Chaus BOE de Nuit, with its equally fascinating melody, was also most sympathetically handled. There was a farther call made on Elgar's compositions when Mr Frank Grovo gave a vigorous rendering of the solo Britain, ask of thyself," with male-voice chorus and accompaniment for two pianos. It was an arduous task for the soloist to sustain the theme, but he did his part very wall. In this number some of the passages in the chorus wore rather forced.

Undoubtedly one of the daintiest and most satisfying items in the programine was Smsct's charming arenado Lady rise." This was sung unsccompanied as s quartette by Mrs G. H. Edwards, Mrs Goldsmith, Mr G. H. Edwards, and Mr C. E . Beavis, whose voices blended admirably. The taste and expression used in the translation of this number was beyond reproach, and the audience would not rest content until it was repeated. Another enjoyable experience we provided by the rendering by Mrs E. G. Barratt of two songs written by Mr Denman Fuller, and which were bracketed together. These were "My love for you

and

The dawn of joy," both being from a recently published sang cpale and or chestrated by the composer for. Friday's oncert. Both were of undoubted musical merit, and were splendidly sung by Mra Barrett, who is the possessor of a voice of considerable range and fexibility. She was recalled for her rendering of the Latter, which she very kindly repeated.

The only other items in the programme woep a couple of numbers for two pianos, jju which Mes Grose and Mr Denman Faller were associated These were a Fantaisie by Garlitt, and a Scherzo Capriccioso by Guilmant, Both were beautifully given, the executants playing together in full aysapally and true artistic

In was a gratifying circumstance that, in spite of the inclement weather, St. George's Hall, where the concert took place, was BICeedingly well #Lod!;

The accompanist was Miss Brotherton Harker, and tie chorus was composed of Sopranos: Mrs E. G. Barrett, Mr Bellamy Frown, Mis Braidwood, Mrs R. Chapman,
