In a meusuro the Son of Heaven "is eclipsed by the overpowering, personality of the Empress Dowager: but although devoid of the quality of charm and personal magnetism which distinguishes his august relative, he passes es an interesting ap pearance. In person he is of slight and élegant figure, nok more than five feet four in height. He has a well-shaped head, with the intellectual qualities well develop. ed, a high brow, with large brown eyes and rather drooping lids, not at all Chinese in form or aotting.. Elis nose is high end, like most numbers of the Imperial Family, in of the so-called "noble" type. A rather large mouth with thin lips, the apper short with a proud curve the lower slightly protruding, a clear-cut, thin jaw, a
strong chin
&little beyond the line of the forehead, with not an ounce of superfluous Heshi on the whole face, give him an ascetic air and, in spite of his rather delicate physique, an appearance of a great reserve of strength. Els completion is not so white and clear as that of the other members of the Iur- perial Family, for the Manchus have whiter skins than the Chintac; but this scoms more the result of delicacy than nature with the Emperor. His luxuriant, very long hair, a characteristic of the Manchus, is beautifully silky and glossy and always arranged with the greatest care. It is said. Ee much dislikes belug shaved, but tradition, imuitable in China, does not allow a-man under forty; even if he be the "Soa of Heaven," to wear a moustache or whiskers. Like all well-bred Chinese, he has small feet and hands, the latter long and thin and most expressive.
DESS AND HABITS.
The Emperor dresses with extremia neatness and great simplicity, wearing fow ornaments and no jewels cxcept on State occasions. His face is kindly in expres sion, but the glance from his rather heavy- lidded eyes is Throwed and intolligunt. Hie ruanner is shy and retiring, but there is a splinx-liko quality to his smile. Ju his eyes ons bes the calan, half-contemptuous outlook upon the world of the istatist. There is an abstractness in the subtilty of his rogard, but it is difficult to tell whether this comes froma & scuse of power or from, akuowledge of the lack of it
RELATIONS WITH THE EMPRESS DOWAGER, Although Kwang-hsu has suffered at the hods of the Eupress Dowager he does not appear to regard her with any special animosity. Their relations, though rigidly formal, as is necessary from their exalted positions, are friendly enough. If there is any feeling on his part as to the chock his Government received by the
