At the close of the British Expedition. to Lhase, China had quite resigned itself to the prospect of losing its protectorate, feeble though it was, over Western Tibet e., Lhassa and the country lying within its juri-diction--and determined, therefore, to strengthen its hold over the eastern rosion, adjoining Chian, se far west as Chiamdo. A Chinese envoy was sent to organise matters, bet domuunda for forced labour amde by this functionary raised the flaim and discontent of the Tibetans, and this, combined with the retreat of the Betish expedition, which was attributed mainly to fear, inspired the lass with the ides of reconquering the whole region.
