At the close of the British Expedition. to Lhase, China had quite resigned itself to the prospect of losing its protectorate, feeble though it was, over Western Tibet e., Lhassa and the country lying within its juri-diction--and determined, therefore, to strengthen its hold over the eastern rosion, adjoining Chian, se far west as Chiamdo.
