THE NATIONALITY OF CHRİST.
BERLIN, Aug. 15.
It remained for an American delegate to provide the principal theme of contention it the International Historical Congress, which has just concluded its session here. Prof. Paul Hapt, of Baltimore, created. SEAT OFiscussion. among Gawan theologians by his address on "The History of Galilee," title enly veiling his real subject, which was based on the question: Was Jesus a Jew?" Prof. Dant an- swered this negatively, stating that Christ was not born in Bethlehem, according to the early Christian ndition, but in at He conreuded that thê assess- acnt which recessitated Joseph's journey ito Bethlehem occurred eleven years after Christ's birth. After a succession of argu ments, Prof. Anupt put forward his conclusion that it was improbable that Christ was a descendant of David.. It was probsole, on the other hint, that-he-was- descendant of the Aryan Coloniste of Galilee. Possibly if His genealogical trec could be traced far enough it would be shown that he was a descendant of Zurons Lex.
It was at this point that a war of werda ensued between Prof. Haupt and the Ger man professor. Prof. Haupt's arguments ware attacked in detail and perhaps because it was a question of one against another he did hot far weli.
The leading German biblical expert pre-
sent expressed the pith of the German ide when he said it was impossible to deside iontifically whether Christ was a Jow by race. The point of importance Tas that Christ was unquestionably a Jew by religion.
Such violent dissension was prodnonet that the chairman's efforts to calm the controversialists were for a long time ineffectual.
