The central point of the city, in its festive garb to-day, was, of course, the place where the aged Emperor sat in state to watch the procession pass. In front of the imperial Palace a so-called pavilion in itseli little palace, had been erected on the Ringstrasse in a somewhat fantastic style of architectura, and roofed by an enormous imperial crown. This building contains a number of rooms, but the Emperor stood on the raised torrade in front, surrounded by all the members of his family and royal visitors from related houses to the number altogether of about eights.
The pageant was composed of two divi sion, first an historical part, comprising a series of nineteen groups representing im- portant events in the history of the Haps. burg dynasty from its foundation by Rudolph I down to the beginning of the prescut cign, followed by a procession of representatives cf the peoples and nation- alities over which the Austrian Emperor rules. The first part was equipped with lavish magnificence under the cares of a number of distinguished artists and antiquaries. Austrian noblemen of the most famous families marched or rode in the procession in the roles of their an cestors. In many cases, too, they wore be very armour and trappings of the time represented.

The Emperor, as he watched the long series of historical pictures, asked numerous questions of Count Wilczek, who stood beside him, and from time to time signalled his approval of some particularly picture sque or characteristic arrangement, or acknowledged the salutes of "the nobles [permally known to him who took part, cometimes smiling at the strange figures wy eut in their ancestors' armour.
