Negotiations for the payment of an inddragtly, by. China to Japan for the illo capture of the Tated Maro II in February last and which was responsible for the boycott against Japanese goods now going on, were opened yesterday and will be continued today. Ther opening of negotiation was prompted by the two Governments, who desire to olose the incident as quickly as possible. Both the Viceroy and the Consul-General have - received instructions to tant effect.

The Chinese here offer to pay any in- demnity which may be demanded by Japan on behalf of their Government out of the funds of the various societies. But the general opinion is that the offer will be declined.
