GENERAL STOSSEL'S SENTENCE.
The Tsar signed on 17th the report freni the Military Court submitted by the Minister for War relating to the sentences on the generals concurried in the surrender
of Port Arthur. His Majesty, however, commuted the death sentence passed on General Stossel to imprisonment in a fortress for ten years, with exclusion from: milltary service and Joss of his rank.
DUEL BETWEEN GENERALS. On the conclusion of the trial of the Port Arthur commanders General Fock sent his seconds to General Smirno on the ground of the memorandum written by General Sarnoff regarding the siege, which Gouerl Fock considered as wounding his honour Land repatalion. General Smirnoff replied that he was opposed to the principle of duolling, and would only fight if anjoined to do so by his military superiors. The announcement is published that General Fock's seconds laid the matter before the Chief of the General Stuff, who referred } them to the Minister of Wur, who gave his
consent.

The sensational Fock-Smimoff duel took place on 18th March at St. Petersburg. The Commander of the Bodyguard Regi- dient placed the Riding School at the disposal of the combatants, and ordered the medical staff of tho regiment to make die preparations. The head surgeon won
a dctor who had surped with both generals at Port Arthur during tho war,
The sun was shining brilliantly on the ice covered streets when the renorable Goneral Kireyeff, several officers of the Bodyguard Regiment, and a few ladies drove up to the Riding School shortly before 10, at which hour the principals, accompanied by their seconds, arrivet, and, without exchanging greetings, took up their spective plaers. All the preliminaries being over, General Fock and General Sinipoff stood facing each other with serious and almest grim expressions, ench pointing a revolver fowards his adversary. The conditions authorised ench one to fire in turn, and allowed General Fuck the first shot.
On the signal being given General Fock pressed his trigger and a loud report ened its ceho mingling with the noise of General Smirnoff's pistol bullet, which carried off the right flap of General Fock's regimental coat. Firing went on without Interruption until seven bullets had been exchanged. The seventh was General Fock's, and was followed by a moan from General Spumoff, who beat up his body in pain.
